Location shots

I am going to use a range of different locations. My music video is very different his year to the one i made a few years ago because this one does not particularly have a narrative story plot. I plan to use a location at the band home and then several shot around Norwich, such as one shot where you can see all over castle medow and speed it up as the buses come back and fourth. I plan to use friends in this film because although the song contains quite sad lyrics it has an upbeat tune and i want to play on that. The music video will contain black and white, sepia and colour tones. I want the feel of a vintage video but not as though it was made long ago but modern vintage. I will most probably use simple shot because i want a simple yet effective video.

Schedual

I have also made a filming schedual, i want to keep the filming within the time limit as much as possible because the people i am filming with have limited time, also it give me more of an opportunity to work on other parts of the course.

Facebook email

I sent a standard email out to everyone asking for them to attend my filming day. Due to new technology and the increasing popularity of networking sites i am able to do this.

Getting it done

We chosen a date to film. It's the 23rd of December for my actors and then the 29/12/2009 for the band. We don't want to do them both on the same day because we want natural lighting for both pieces and it'll get dark before we have time. I think these dates are good because people have time off being the holidays however more people may have work or already be busy, fingers crossed it all goes ok!!!!

up in lights

I done my first peice of filming today, i filmed my light machine moving to the time of the beat. i used the dark room for this because it is dark so i can get the best effect and also it is quite soundproof so other noice would not interupt the movement of the light.
The overall product looked very good because of the enviromental factors such as light and noise i was able to control.

Story board

I now know exactly what i want to film, what angle i want it and how i want one frame to transcend to another.
I have now completly finished my storyboard, i have written out a filming schedual for the holidays and i have emailed people on facebook to ensure they are aware of when and where it is. I have invited a lot more people than i need because i am aware that some people would not be able to make it.

The fourth kind

I saw this film on 11/11/2009 it struck me as quite a post-modern film once again not because of its content but because of the way it was layed out. The film was about alien abduction and this has been portrayed for years through film and programmes such as in the 60's the twilight episode the 3rd planet from the sun shows people seen as aliens coming to earth. But this filmw as very differen, the film credits it as being accompanied by real footage and real audio mingled within the film and it does credit it when it appears, but there are extremly post modern points when there will be the film running alongside the actual footage captured on tape, also there are points when she listened on audio and as she presses play the actual audio plays. Also running throughout the film in the director interviewing the woman who the film is about. I find this film a great entertainment although there is speculation as to whether the film is real or not, i though it was a great film to watch as a media student and diffenitly like the ideas of two screens running alongside each other and would like to look further into this for my music video.

How we will use semiotics

We al researched semotics as individuals but Laura furthered the research and identified how it is used in other videos

The age of stupid

Our media group visited cinema city to watch the premier of 'the age of stupid,' and then had a question time with the director, a member of another high school, another member involved in the film and a memeber of the city council. Cinema city has a reputation of being a 'indie' cinema shownig artistic films and covering new directors. The film we watched was displayed to us in a post-modern way, starring Pete Postelwait as obnne of the few surviving humans in the world in 2055. He has stored every ounce of film and television, animal, paitning, book and music onto one huge database storage system. The fiml itself did contain post-modern qualities in the way it was layed out. The film i found was more interesting than other films based apon global warming because of the modrrn twists it contains, also because it included actual news and life story footage i felt i was able to relate to it more.
The postmodern qualities in the film was mainly the way it was set out, because everything was meant to be on a giant dadbase then he used 'touchscreen' computer element but it was like we were seeing it fromt the other side of the screen. Also his ability to fast forward and rewind allowed us to take in information that we had missed but also to reinforce the point. The post-modern element was really effective because it gave a whole new insight to the film. Had it just been global warming then media students may not have taken too much of an interest but because of it's post-modern elemtents we were also greatly intesrested in the film.
The question time after the film was more focused on the enviromental side of tings such as the people they'd interviewed and the progress on the people they'd filmed so i didn't take very much from that. Our group leader did ask as the whether they were holding a competition to allow young people to make their own films in comparision to the film and the director later got in contact with her asking her if she'd like to take part.
The film did give me an inside to post-modern techniques in film and has been an eye opener and looking at the difference between standard and post-modern films

Groups

Another group have decided to join me in workign on my project. They decided because their own ideas werent practical enough such as not having the orginal soudtrack for the video to be edited to, this would have cost exsive time and money for the group and i had the right resources. This also benefits me greatly because i have a large workload so to have othe people helping me is brilliant. Also one of the girl from the toher group is a photography student so she is familar with photoshop which will benefit the project hugely as im making a dvd cover and a magazine advertisment and she'll be able to give is a proffesional quality look

Key features of music video by Andrew Goodwin DU

Andrew Goodwin, in Dancing in the Distraction Factory (1992,
Routledge), has identified the following features of music videos:
1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg stage
performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative,
amplifying, contradicting).
3. There is a relationship between music and visuals (either
illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of
close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which
recur across their work (a visual style).
5. There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens
within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic
treatment of the female body.
6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes,
other music videos, etc).
It is also worth considering:
Whether the video is primarily performance-based, narrative-based or
concept-based and how elements of each are used in it.
You can use Goodwin’s categories to analyse music videos for
yourself.

analysing videos- if i was a boy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIkRiqxWcYU - link to video
likes
the black and white effect is good
Although it's not as effective its good to view a song that doesnt edit to every beat
Slight narrative not heavily quite good

dislikes
Straight away i do not like the beginning bit i think it looks cheesy and not in proper keeping with the rest of the video
the slow motion as she steps out the door doesn't look very good because it doesnt keep in fitting with the beat
dont like the break for dialogue however it does give the small narrative a big push

Laura and Rachel also looked into different videos!

Evaluting music videos- jamie t

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dwh0Wn5vVwE - link to video
Likes
-I like the mixture of black and white and colour and sepia tpye tones
-like his dull colours compared to the clown if i can do this i will
-love different camera angles as their running down alley way close up static and hand held angles
-no narrative but actions fit the words
-lots of different cast memebers doesnt look out of place
-stupid actions when they dance towards camera looks good worried it wouldn't
-not relient on special effects at all
-friends larking about the look i wanted
-smiling a lot different to beyonces 'if i were a boy'
-dark and night signifies they spend loads of time together close friends
-reverse looks good down alley way
-end is good smoke not just cut to black

Dislikes
There isn;t really anything i dislike about this ilm coming from the angle iw ant to tak with my video. I think this is the exact type of video i want to create. This is my biggest influence and i hope i can work to this standard.

Laura Marling new romantic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNxar07_9YA

What I like about Laura Marling’s video is the way it is simple yet very effective. I showed it to a selected audience including friends and family members and they commented on how they really liked the video because they said the shadow effects on the wall give the video enough body to watch n its own so it works well. However I want more going on in my video and obviously with this video it just is Marling sitting down playing her guitar.

Noah and the Whale - 5 Years time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8YCSJpF4g4
With the Noah and the whale video it has the sense of happiness I like, it combines a professional quality of video like at the very beginning when there are several videos on screen at once and the way the beat and video have been sync perfectly so it’s a good finished product. It uses goo ideas such as placing the actors in a location where they feel comfortable and happy and it’s not a put on performance it’s happy but also the video doesn’t really have a deal psychological meaning, it’s just a fun and good video to watch and I would quite like to take my product that way, although I would like to put a little bit of meaning to my video because I find it is more appropriate to my song but I don’t want anything to heavy because I think it would burden the piece. What I don’t like about the video is I think it slightly plays up to being a comedy too much, I think it’s a nice video without having comedic costume and wigs on. I want my piece to feel more of just a positive video but without being funny.

Semiotics in my media work

After developing my understanding on semiotics even further by reading other peoples essays off of the aber website (linked below) I have come to notice what an important role semiotics will play in my music video. I want a black and white video but I don’t want to try and recreate a time when there was no option of colour in my actual video. So I want it to have a vintage feel but a deliberate modern vintage sense. I may well also have splashes of colour in my video. I want my video to have a funky happy feeling about it, I’m going to try and costume people appropriately with any girls staring in it wearing feminine clothing and the men wearing colourful clothes to give the imagery of a sort of festival/ hippy feel and link in the audiences mind a time a kind of peace and happiness. The whether is not an important factor so I won’t be limited as to what days I can film because not only will it be in black and white anyway but also if my actors are showing a happy time in the rain I don’t think it’s a major issue.

Emailing the band

We emailed the band an interview because it was not convenient to interview the band face to face seeing as they all have full time work. We sent them four questions, then from the answers got an idea of what they were about and how to conduct our music video tot heir ideals.

Q:How would you classify the music you perform?
A: Our music is a mcture of jazz, funk and house style music. Our songs vary so much from track to track so it's hard to categorise our music speicifically. We our influenced by whatever we our listening to at the time of writing our songs.

Q:Who are your influences?
A: We have so many influences, a mixture of everyone from every different genre of music. We seek influence from bands such as Crazy P, The Doors, The Bealtes, Mr Scruff, the talking heads, Echo and the bunnymen, Bob Dylan, the editors and so many more people. It's a huge mixture and we like dfferent aspects of each style of music.

Q: Are their any current music videos which you like and would like your video to be like?
A: We really like the Jamie T video sticks and stones because of the fun feel it's got to it. We love seeingbands live so i suppose a more performance lead rather than narrative lead video would be good.

Q:If you could compare yourself to any artist how would it be and why?
A: It would be so hard to say. Mainly Crazy P i guess because the style of music is similar to ours and their sense of performance we see on stage is very similar to ours.

From this questionnaire i was able to decide certain aspects of the video. I decided i would make the video performance lead, with no realy narrative, the band seem to like more of a post-modern style of music so i want a video to match. I want influencers from their favourite artists so will use certain props to contribute, recently after seeing Crazy P i saw the the lead artist wearing a silver glove, like one of the band members own so i will ensure their wearing it in the video to signify their influences.

Wednesday 7 October 2009

I've had several different ideas on location and different shoots for the video, seeing as the song i am using is performed by my brother i am able to get a lot of live footage on the band which is a major advantage because thats the type of style i want for my music video. I have decided to use balck and white aswell because i want a retro feel to the video because its my instant first thoughts when i listen to the song
Me and Kloe have deicded not to work together anymore on our project due to we want to work on different products, i am taking to Rachel in our media class to see whether we have the same ieas and wehther it will be plausable ot work with her on a project

Band profile

The band we are filming are the carpet monsters, the band memebers consist of:
Laura Hooper - Vocals
Matthew Castle- Guitar
Simon Durrant- Bass guitar
They've been together since 2005 and play at local pubs, and beach festivals.
We decided to do the song: Keep on rolling

I have close connections with this band so it's realistic to film them and easy to get in connact with them
We had to decided in class who to work with in our A2 productions along with what we planned to create. Me and Kloe who worked together on the last production decided to work together again because the divsions of the roles were suitable to us. Kloe wanted to have a bigger part in the sub tasks and i wanted a bigger role in the directing, editing, sound teching and other major parts with creating the actual film product. We decided to make a music video because it appeals to a major interest of mine and i feel it was a big strength of mine also we can escape any copy right details because i am able to use music from a copy right source.
Welcome to my blog, i will be uploading work and ideas throughout my A2 media course. Enjoy!
